Artist Biography

Michael Lawrence, son of tough guy actor Marc Lawrence, was born November 7, 1943 in Los Angeles, California. He lived in Italy beginning in 1951 after his father was blacklisted for testimony at the HUAC hearings. Michael graduated from UCLA with a BFA in 1966. He is best known for whimsical watercolors and bronze sculpture, often with a literary theme based on the works of Lewis Carroll, James Joyce, and Lawrence Durrell. He was deeply influenced by his friendships; notably with Jim Morrison of the Doors and Ray Bradbury, the science fiction writer. During the late 70s and early 80s he worked in acrylics, using bright colors and an impasto style to create a series called Skaters inspired by the roller skaters along the Venice Beach boardwalk.
