Artist Biography

Douglas Atwill was born in Pasadena, California. He studied in Perugia, Italy in 1958. He received his BA and MA from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1981, 1982, and 1985 he was featured at Dubose Gallery in Houston, Texas. Atwill's work has been exhibited in New Mexico to Arizona, to Illinois, to Oklahoma and many more places. Atwill has been interested in the Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Pieter de Hooch. He has always been fascinated in the intimacy of the paintings and how they represented their Dutch Kingdoms in realistic styles. Atwill carries over the intimacy the Dutch display in their painting when painting landscapes and garden scenes of his own town. Just like Vermeer who gives viewers a glimpse of his studio space, Atwill reflects this by allowing his viewers to catch a glimpse of into his own space by painting his personal garden.
