Artist Biography

Cisco Jimenez was born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, in 1969. Cisco Jiménez studied at Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Cuernavaca, Mexico, and Industrial Design in 1989 for three years. In 1991, he decided to go to New York to the Art Students League. He has been exhibiting in Mexico, Canada, United States and Europe since the early 90s. He works and lives in Cuernavaca, Mexico. In 2001 he was invited to collaborate with Jimmie Durham at the 49th Venice Biennial. Cisco Jiménez started as a political cartoonist in the Mexican press before going on to study art in Mexico and at the Art Students League of New York. Drawing upon the tradition of Mexican popular art which utilizes text as an educational, political, religious or commercial element within aesthetic objects and paintings, Jimenez creates his own icons, naming his paintings with humorous neologisms.
