Artist Biography

Born in 1906, Maurice Van Essche's family moved to Brussels when he was five years old. In 1925 his studies were interrupted to earn a living working in a stained glass studio which had some influence on the development of his painting style. In 1940 Maurice Van Essche was exiled by German occupation of Belgium and moved to South Africa. Through the 1940’s he helped found both the Continental School of Art, Cape Town and the International Art Club. In 1971 he departed for Europe and settled in France where he died in 1977.
