Artist Biography

Herb Rather is a painter whose subject is chronicling the past in the form of architecture. Working in watercolor and representational style, he pays strong attention to details and use of color. Rather graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and then went on to study architecture and in 1954 graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. He practiced architecture for 43 years. He has also studied under Ed Whitney, Harold Phoenix, and Marge Brichler. His subject matter tends to be things that interest him, like his life-long love for Jazz music and his love for old architecture. Rather has shown in many juried exhibits and won many awards.
