Artist Biography

Karl Julius Umlauf was born in South Haven, Michigan in 1911. Umlauf showed and interest in carving and forming figures at an early age. He started to train at a youth program offered by the Art Institute of Chicago. After he graduated from high school he immediately began to study at the institute. In 1932, after three years of study, he worked as an assistant under Viola Norman at the Chicago School of Sculpture. During this time the young artist created a pair of sculptures that were exhibited at the World's Fair held in Chicago in 1933. He returned to school in 1934 and studied for another two years. His major early influences were artists like Rodin and Donatello. Over his lengthy career Umlauf exhibited a broad range of artistic expression, including realistic, expressionist and abstract works.
