Artist Biography

Born in Montreal in 1971, Sylvain Coulombe enrolled at UQAM to study environmental design with a passion to create at the age of twenty two. His field of study influenced his unique visual language which is filled with textures, geometric, and color compositions. He felt that canvas did not work for his subjects so he started painting on wood. This allowed him to have a wider variety of technique that brought out the depth of his characters. To Sylvain Coulumbe painting is a playful way to experiment with feelings and he explores this by using colors and textures until they began to speak to him. He is quoted saying, "The feeling inside me is my main inspiration; all my environment and all that I lived is unconsciously digested so that later I can transpose it into my work.” He represents the human form in a fashion that is curious and strikingly vivid, delivering a surrealist approach to his portraiture. Whether his figures are looking towards the viewer or off into a distant world, a relationship is developed between the spectator and the artwork.
