Artist Biography

The challenge for an impressionist painter is to capture the essence of the moment—the atmosphere created by color and light. Spires is mostly self-taught, though she has sought well-known teachers in William Earle, Ted Goerschner, Marian Steel and Raymond Froman, working with William Earle for 12 years. Her current works reflect a lifelong journey to the present: an innate talent for draftsmanship since childhood: her training as a professional interior designer honed a skill and daring in the use of color. "The most revolutionary thing to happen to me is the understanding of the light and what it does to my art pieces," Spires has said. She works in oil, for the most part, both in the studio and on location. Her most popular works are landscapes from the Santa Fe area, Texas Hill Country, New England and Colorado along with her figure and animal studies as well as markets from Mexico. Doris was one of 30 Texas artists to be represented at Richmond, Texas Sesquicentennial. Chosen to participate in the cultural exchange program Midland, Texas has with Dongying, China.
